Yoga Is….by
Judith Valerie
Yoga is an
ancient art and philosophy which evolved over thousands of
years in India. It is a practice of awareness training,
personal development, healing, and transformation. The
Sanskrit word “yoga” means to join, bond, or unite. Yoga
unites the body and mind bringing harmony and well-being.
Yoga strengthens our sense of unity with nature, other
people, and vital life in all its many forms. Ultimately,
yoga is a journey which enables us to remember, recognize
and realize our individual self as being united with God.

Yoga was
brought to the United States just a little over a hundred
years ago. The most prevalent aspect of yoga to become
popularized in the west is hatha yoga. It includes physical
poses or postures called asana and breathing exercises
called pranayama. Hatha yoga purifies, strengthens and
balances the body and mind. It also enables us to become
more relaxed, centered, contemplative, tranquil, intuitive,
creative and connected to our own sense of spirituality.
Finding a
compatible yoga teacher can be quite an exploration!
Choosing a teacher is an opportunity to experience what is
being offered and listen deeply to how your body, mind,
emotions and spirit resonate. In selecting a teacher, ask
friends for recommendations, read website information, talk
with the teacher on the phone to get a sense of her and to
ask any questions about her teaching, qualifications,
particular focus or expertise. Then try it and see.
JV’s Yoga is
an eclectic blend of decades of styles and teachers Judith
has studied with since 1977. These include Iyengar yoga, her
first twelve years, Ashtanga yoga, for her first
residential teacher training program, classical yoga from
several month long stays at yoga ashrams, and Integral yoga.
Judith was certified at the 200 hour and 500 hour
professional levels of teacher trainings by Kripalu Yoga
Center. She has also enjoyed explorations with Angela Farmer
and Victor van Kooten for a month in Molivos, Greece, Betsy
Dowell and Lila Pierce in the Anusara tradition, and Yoga
for Osteoporosis Prevention Studies and training with
Nirmala Limaye, M.D., and Kay Hawkins. |
